Nonviolent Resistance

They taught us that the only way

to nonviolently resist

is to compliantly persist ,

to exist in silence and burn candles

while they burn villages,

to wave banners

while they waive human rights.

DO NOT BOYCOTT

DO NOT DIVEST

DO NOT FIGHT

Just light another candle

while another bullet you bought

enters another innocent chest.

They taught us about Dr. King’s dream

but it didn’t seem important to them

to show us his letter from Birmingham jail

and they failed to mention

the sermons he gave against the war

and how, when he was killed,

he was campaigning for the poor.

They told us we were Christians

but their Jesus Christ is filled with hate,

somehow it’s lost on them

that he gave his life nonviolently

resisting the state.

About soitgoes1984

I was born and raised on land stolen from the Pocumtuc. I now live on a small island in the middle of the Pacific ocean, on land that was stolen more recently, from the Hawaiians. I am addict, struggling to kick the habit of fossil fuel. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
