In The Manger

If Jesus had died in the manger

and the wise men just walked away

with their myrrh

and their frankincense

and their gold

would continents still have been conquered

would ancestors still have been sold

would lies still have been told

justifying hell on earth?

and what if it wasn’t a virgin birth

would the catholic church still be worth

billions and billions

would the bible still have been used

to justify killing millions and millions

would we still bless ourselves

before stoning our neighbors

would we still believe that God

got a teenager pregnant

and condemns pregnant teenagers

and single mothers

and same-sex lovers

would we still pray to Saint Michael

before dropping bombs on mangers

killing newborn babies

and mothers

and shepherds

to fill our pockets with their gold

and myrrh

and frankincense

would we still look the other way

as cops kill our black neighbors

in our name

with our bread

would we still ignore the dead

and the hungry

as long as we’re alive

and well fed

would we still buy things we don’t need

would we still live our lives

consumed with greed

and join the stampede

of Christmas shoppers

literally trampling human beings

to get the last flat screen TV

would we still be so blind

to reality,

so drunk on church wine

that we couldn’t see

all of the hypocrisy?
