Asylum

The lunatics aren’t running the asylum

they’re running the entire country

hell bent on destroying the world

and I don’t mean just this current guy

if you think that the madness

just recently started

you’re either naive or high

because the lunatics have been calling the shots

since the beginning

and they pretend to be winning

their Wall Street chess games

playing only with stolen pieces

and they want us to believe

that peace is something

poor people have to die for

and that we all have to buy more

and we all have to support war

and we all have to be content

here on the floor

thankful for bread crumbs

and we’re taught to look down at refugees

immigrants

beggars

and we thumb our noses

and anyone who doesn’t look like us

and speak our tongue

and we’re taught to blindly trust

in this greedy,

awful,

divisive

American god

but I only trust in nature

I only trust in life

not death

I only trust in giving

not taking

because I prefer to share in the breath

so I would rather die

than stay in line to keep on raking

through the ashes of humanity

from continent to continent

and sea to sea

I am a legionnaire

who had to flee Rome

before Caesar locked me up

in the asylum.

So here I am in the empire’s twilight

seeking asylum in Hawaii,

in this kingdom without it’s queen

in this kingdom with vivid memories

of the United States Marines

helping act out scenes from the bible

they kissed the queens cheek

took the silver coins

and it’s long been

wrongly viewed as libel

to call it what it is

but Clinton twisted Uncle Sam’s arm

and he admitted what we did

with public law 103-150

on November 23, 1993

but here we are

still Judas-kissing the Queen

each and every day

as we pay for the occupation.

I am ashamed of the land I come from

I am ashamed of the things I’ve done

I am ashamed that I kept on loading

bullets into Uncle Sam’s gun

even after I realized that he was responsible

for the blood that’s long been spilled

in order to protect the charging bull

that keeps our houses filled

with things we don’t need

and keeps our ocean’s filled

with byproducts of greed

that keep riding the waves of consumerism

and crash landing on Hawaiian beaches

where monk seals and sea turtles

have to navigate through endless plastic

to find somewhere to sunbathe.

About soitgoes1984

I was born and raised on land stolen from the Pocumtuc. I now live on a small island in the middle of the Pacific ocean, on land that was stolen more recently, from the Hawaiians. I am addict, struggling to kick the habit of fossil fuel. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
