Old Tree

There was a very old tree

as tall as the heavens, it seemed

with roots reaching down

into the depths of the earth

the old tree had grown strong since birth

and stood tall through the centuries

surviving storm after storm

and fire after fire

this old tree had battled disease

and battled drought

and there was no doubt

that this tree could survive anything

that came it’s way

until one day a strange animal came along

with a loud machine

and cut down the old tree

and as the old tree fell to the earth

it couldn’t see

because trees don’t have eyes

but it realized that it had fallen

on the strange animal

and killed it

but the old tree wasn’t happy about this

because it never wanted to hurt

any living thing

it only ever wanted

to be a tree,

and it got to be…

and there is no moral

to this story.

About soitgoes1984

I was born and raised on land stolen from the Pocumtuc. I now live on a small island in the middle of the Pacific ocean, on land that was stolen more recently, from the Hawaiians. I am addict, struggling to kick the habit of fossil fuel. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
