FIRE

Smoke signals have been rising

   Hiroshima

for some time now.

   Nagasaki

We ignore the smoke

   Korea

but there it is

   Guatemala

as plain as day

   Laos

but we relax

   Vietnam

when we hear

   Cambodia

that there’s no fire

   Grenada

the smoke

   Lebanon

is just our eyes

   Libya

playing tricks

   El Salvador

on us.

   Nicaragua

Usually though,

   Panama

where there is smoke

   Iraq

there’s fire.

   Somalia

But, there’s no fire

   Bosnia

they say

   Sudan

things are fine

   Afghanistan

nothing to worry about

   Yemen

they say

   Iraq

but we see smoke

   Pakistan

we see a lot

   Somalia

of smoke

   Uganda

and something tells us

   Syria

that there must

   Gaza

be fire…

   Ferguson

and I suppose

   Standing Rock

that deep down

   Tulsa

we knew all along

   Wounded Knee

and didn’t really care

   Jamestown

because maybe

   Plymouth

we enjoy the warmth.

About soitgoes1984

I was born and raised on land stolen from the Pocumtuc. I now live on a small island in the middle of the Pacific ocean, on land that was stolen more recently, from the Hawaiians. I am addict, struggling to kick the habit of fossil fuel. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
