Walk Away From The Table

The dictionary definition of Cannibalism is:

n.

1. The act of eating human flesh or the flesh of one’s own kind.

2. Savage and inhuman cruelty.

We are cannibals.

Our pastime is cannibalism.

We feed on the flesh of the tired,

the hungry,

the poor

and what is our foreign (and domestic) policy

if not savage and inhuman cruelty?

Our bread is baked in the pyres of the oppressed

our butter churned from milk stolen from their nurseries.

Americans fear many things,

but what we are most afraid of is the truth

we are afraid that if we look up from our dinner table

we will realize that what Cain did to Abel

is nothing compared to what we do each day

and no matter how many prayers we pray,

our deeds can never be undone

once our dinner plate is empty,

we cannot regurgitate the oppressed

the only thing we can do

is stop accepting another plateful

and then another…

and we can stand up

and say ENOUGH,

walk away from the table

and refuse to pay the bill.

I was born and raised on land stolen from the Pocumtuc. I now live on a small island in the middle of the Pacific ocean, on land that was stolen more recently, from the Hawaiians. I am addict, struggling to kick the habit of fossil fuel. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.
