Autumn

autumn was ours

the rest they can take

like summertime at the lake

and winter, warm

near the fireplace

and spring…

but before all the leaves fell

and it all went to hell

we had autumn

but its fading now

like those green leaves

fading too fast

through beauty

to dull brown

and by springtime

they are all but forgotten

as they further fade

into the ground

and nourish new growth

as part of the soil.

The water boils now

for tea

as I sit here by the ocean

with these fading memories

that arise in my dreams

once in a while

and I can’t help but smile

because all the seasons,

through both sunshine

and stormy weather

helped my heart grow

helped get me

where I needed to go

and here I am,

on this 5 acre farm

in paradise

surrounded by chickens,

ducks,

dogs,

cats,

a goat

and a loving wife

thankful you convinced me

not to let go of life

thankful our paths crossed

thankful,

though it fades,

that autumn still remains

with me in my memories
