Alone

quicksand running

through time

out of line

can’t seem to find

reason or rhyme

seasons behind

adding up

32 summers

wait and see

here comes 33

Pacific breeze

shaking leaves

off these

fruit trees

and in the ocean

I still see

freedom

I’m longing for

and happiness

and open doors

ripped off hinges

and now

even my friends

on the fringes

of society

no longer make

the time for me

can’t understand

the world I see

far too busy

to just breathe

always longing

to believe

in something

and someone

it turns to

a re-run

just look at

what we’ve done

through years

and through centuries

from fear

and from pleasantries

let’s break locks

throw away the keys

let no one

control you

no authority

own you

though they may want

to stone you

or toss you

in jail

and tell you

you’ve failed

but no one

has sailed

at your helm

don’t let them

overwhelm you

with lies

you can open

your eyes now

dive in

off the bow

you might sink

or swim

it might get bright

or dim

but even if

you drown

you will have found

the answer

to life’s’ greatest riddle

and violin

or fiddle

will play you

off stage

as you’ve reached

the last page

and realize

that the cage

was always open

though the system

always broken

truer words

have not

been spoken

to you

than you are capable

of speaking

to yourself

there is no book

on any shelf

that can lead you

to happiness

or betray you

with one last kiss

there’s no silver

that can buy

or explorer

that can find

your soul

far too many

grow far too old

never breaking

from the mold

always searching

for more gold

forever doing

what they’re told

it’s time now,

come in

from the cold

the universe

is yours to hold

in the palm

of your hand

from the last

drop of water

to the last

grain of sand
