hiccups

these are hiccups

in an otherwise

perfectly fine society

perfect in most ways

we claim to be

now back to your regularly

scheduled programing

programmed not to see

hiccups as anything more

than a glitch

in american folklore

will there be anymore

hiccups

but of course

this is not a myth

not an old wives tale

without fail

these things happen

now and then

they happen

time and again

and again

and again

we’re failing

and its not

just the rust belt anymore

now it knocks

on Hollywood’s door

a generation has grown up

playing war

on X-Box

and Playstation

playing first-person

shooter games

their whole summer vacation

a generation conditioned

to think that violence

is the answer

with their parents supporting war

but walking a mile

to cure cancer

and their kids learn

that white middle class

lives matter

but as their bank accounts

got fatter

the thing they lacked was love

but when they acted out

all they got was drugs

ritalin and adderall

heres a fifty

go to the mall

buy yourself that

new video game,

whats it called?

oh, they’re all the same

and its all the same stories

year after year

we still cheer

as bombs drop

overseas

and call the cops

when we see

a black kid

in our neighborhood

must be up to no good

and we don’t care

when we find out

his uncle lives there

we’ll still stare

then cry it’s unfair

when a white kid

shoots up his school

he must be the exception

that proves the rule

but it happens more

and more

these hiccups

causing sore throats

nothing to worry about

but fear those immigrants

on boats

escaping our bombs

here,

give junior these pills

they should calm him

if not

his future’s not yet grim

he can join the army

be all he can be…

oh, he shot up

his college campus

we never saw it coming.
